The controversy surrounding the conversion of some Mizos of northeastern India into the Jewish religion has been politicalized with the involvement of the respective governments of India and Israel. What could be the reasons or motives behind this conversion? These people have made claims of being the descendent of Bnei Menashe and regarded themselves as one of the lost tribes of Israel. They even have synagogues and schools in Manipur and Mizoram which are mostly funded from Israel.

Can anyone tell me why should the govt. of India get involve in such a matter which does not have much to do with its internal or external security? India with a democratic system of government and secularism as one of its guiding factors has not seen much about such involvement of the govt. in religious matter. What does this have to do with the bilateral relations between India and Israel?
